It’s hard enough to walk plantation grounds in the US without thinking about the painful and frustrating lives of those enslaved people who once stepped through the same exact land.
But what’s worse? How about the plantations that, before the land became colonized and used for this purpose, were once sacred indigenous lands that had been settled by their people for hundreds of years.
How quickly history is essentially rewritten over the natives, right?
Earthwork mounds were looted, leveled, and destroyed. Native children were separated from their parents to have their lives reshaped through indoctrination at “boarding schools” funded by the U.S. Government.
The truth of United States history is multi-layered and painful to explore in a number of ways, but nonetheless it is important we do not forget those who originally occupied this land, despite the concerted efforts that have been made to eradicate them and their heritage.
